FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why get married in Portugal?

Where do we begin?! The weather, the hospitality, the warm welcome, the choice of venues, the people, affordability, the food and wine…

Can we elope in Portugal?

Portugal is renowned for being one of the most affordable elopement destinations in Europe, allowing couples to plan an unforgettable elopement without breaking the bank!

Can you perform a legal marriage?

No. A marriage is a legal status in the form of an officially signed contract. Couples must first marry legally either in Portugal or in another country (usually the country of residence). I perform a symbolic wedding ceremony, which will celebrate your marriage.

Will our symbolic wedding “feel like a real wedding”?

Absolutely! Your wedding celebration will be designed and carried out to suit you. It can be as formal or as informal as you wish.

Can I combine a legal and symbolic wedding?

Yes! We can work with a legal registrar on the day with careful planning.

Where can I hold my wedding in Portugal?

There are many venue options that internet searches can provide you with. These will range from official wedding venues to beaches, forests, city locations and beyond… You might be considering a location in or around Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra, or further afield. I am more than happy to explore ideas with you and I’m willing to travel if circumstances allow.

Are gay/same-sex marriages legal in Portugal?

Yes, since 2010. Foreign nationals can marry even if marriage between same-sex couples is not recognized in their country of origin. The legal process of marriage must be conducted as outlined above and I am more than happy to perform as your Celebrant, regardless of how you identify.

How long is a wedding led by a Celebrant?

Usually between 30 and 40 minutes. Please consider your guests, especially if they are young children, elderly or mobility challenged. You should also check with the venue regarding accessibility, available shade from the sun, etc., as well as the unlikely need for shelter from the rain.

Can foreign nationals get legally married in Portugal?

Currently, there is no legal residency requirement for a wedding in Portugal. Foreign citizens do not acquire Portuguese nationality when marrying a Portuguese citizen. Whether it is a civil marriage or any religious marriage, you must request a license, which can be obtained from any Portuguese Civil Registrar Office across the country.

At what age can you get married in Portugal?

The minimum age requirement for getting married in Portugal is 16. However, written consent of both parents is required for those aged under 18.

How quickly can you legally marry in Portugal?

It usually takes at least four weeks from submission until you are issued a marriage license, and once the license is issued, the wedding must take place within six months.
